Clear vision is not the only thing that matters to contact lens wearers, as they are also concerned with comfort and safety. Research in recent years has paid great attention to the discomfort felt by contact lens wearers, and particular focus has been paid to ways of minimising it. According to a series of studies conducted by Australia’s Brien Holden Vision Institute, one way of ensuring the greatest possible comfort for lens wearers is to determine the best combination of contact lens and lens care product.
Finding the right combination can be quite difficult as the cause of discomfort is usually hard to pinpoint. What makes the task of eye care practitioners even more complex is the fact that they must provide their patients with the healthiest option in order to avoid potential complications later on.
The research team at the Brien Holden Vision Institute has established that some contact lenses deliver optimum performance in combination with a specific lens care products. This conclusion was formed after the institute conducted tests across 37 different combinations.
One of the key findings of the series is evidence that symptoms and complication rates vary in accordance with the combination used; combinations scoring highest for comfort did not necessarily achieve positive results regarding complication rates. Daily disposable lenses were found to deliver greater comfort and low rates of complications. As the researchers point out in their report, the findings should help eye care practitioners ensure that commercial products deliver the best possible performance; they can achieve this by matching the prescribed contact lenses with an appropriate lens care product.
