Living in an urban environment can affect a person’s health in numerous ways. Pollution, dust and smog have been linked to respiratory problems, allergies and cardiovascular disease, to mention but a few. These are factors that also affect ocular health and can cause eye problems or discomfort for contact lens wearers. The latter often have to deal with the added impact of working in an office, where they may be required to spend long hours in front of a computer. According to the findings of a study led by Dr Marjorie J Rah, Bausch + Lomb manager of global medical affairs, daily disposable contacts could be the best solution for people living and working in urban areas and who are susceptible to environment-related eye irritations.
As reported in Contact Lens Spectrum, two groups of contact lens wearers were supplied with Bausch + Lomb’s SofLens Daily Disposable lenses and wore them for seven days. The first group, which comprised 216 people between the ages of 15 and 40, was required to use electronic devices for about four hours daily and for at least four days during that week. When the experiment ended, 85% of the study participants said that the lenses had delivered clear, sharp vision even when the subjects were using an electronic device. In addition, 74% said that the lenses had reduced fatigue during prolonged use of such devices.
With the second group, the aim was to establish the benefits of the lenses for people subjected to the impact of outdoor factors. The investigation involved 215 people aged 18 to 40. After seven days of wearing the SofLens Daily Disposable lenses, 82% reported clear, sharp vision despite the dust and pollution, while 76% agreed that the lenses had reduced eye irritation.
