The option to buy contact lenses online has resulted in many users opting to self prescribe when they want better vision. However, there is a big downside to this that many may not be aware of. The main reason to never take chances with self prescribing contact lenses is the risk of permanent damage to the eye which can over time result in permanent vision loss. Of course many do not believe it will ever happen to them, as the lenses they have chosen (without a proper fitting and an optometrist to check the fit) feel fine and vision seems better! If lucky, vision may not suffer long term, but mostly that is not the case. Improper fit will cause irritation to the eyeball, resulting in a corneal abrasion (loss of the surface epithelial layer of the eye’s cornea) or corneal ulcer. (an open sore on the cornea which can be caused by contact lens misuse. It is a serious condition and may result in vision loss or blindness. )
Corneal Ulcers are preventable and appropriate timely treatment will improve with minimal adverse effects on vision. Proper contact lens fit and replacement schedule are imperative for good eye health and should not be overlooked.
Corneal Ulcer Self-treatment consists of removing contact lenses, applying a cool compress to the affected eye, washing hands often, and OTC pain medications. We recommend a visit to your optometrist/eye dr. for complete diagnosis and treatment.
