Bausch + Lomb Secures FDA Marketing Clearance For New Contact Lenses

Bausch + Lomb is one of the first names that springs to mind when contact lenses are concerned. Earlier this year, the US eye-care company was acquired by Canada’s Valeant Pharmaceuticals, and last week it was announced that Bausch + Lomb’s latest product had passed a major marketing hurdle in the US: obtaining clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA nod of approval was given to the new frequent disposable silicone hydrogel contact lenses that incorporate Bausch + Lomb’s MoistureSeal technology. This is the first truly innovative technology to emerge in this product category in seven years, according to Valeant’s statement. Bausch + Lomb has taken frequent replacement silicone hydrogel contact lenses to the next level, by combining a breakthrough material and new manufacturing processes. The result is a contact lens that delivers exceptional comfort and crisp vision. The MoistureSeal technology builds on Bausch + Lomb’s previous successes in innovation, among them vision care breakthroughs such as the Biotrue ONEday contact lenses (which hit the market last year), and the Biotrue multi-purpose solution.

Valeant chairman and CEO J. Michael Pearson said that it was particularly encouraging to secure FDA clearance considerably sooner than expected. The new Bausch + Lomb technology holds great potential for improving lens wear experience. In combination with Biotrue ONEday, it is set to deliver unprecedented levels of comfort for contact lens users, and will ensure the clearest of vision all day long, Pearson added.
