The first thing to do is make sure your glasses or contact lens prescription is up-to-date. The best thing for those working with a computer is to get custom computer glasses.
Your eyes may also be subjected to additional strain by old monitors and low-resolution screens. It is advised that you invest in a flat screen with a high resolution to prevent extra fatigue. Lighting also plays a role, as excessively bright overhead lights will strain your eyes so make sure they are no brighter than the PC display.
Much of the eye strain resulting from desk-based work has to do with your sitting position. Many people sit too close to the computer screen, which usually leads to tired eyes and blurred vision. If your mouse is too far away from you when seated this can also have an effect on eye-strain, as it results in leaning closer to the screen. You should also avoid the position known as “turtling” – this is when people try to get closer by rounding their back, pushing their chin forward and tilting their head back. If a good posture doesn’t allow you to see the screen clearly, then it’s time for a visit to your eye doctor. Last but not least, you need a chair with proper back support, as this will allow you to assume a good posture and remain at a comfortable viewing distance.
